We have learned so far that it consists of five layers, that it has had a rough beginning full of false starts, and that life on our planet would not be possible without it. We discovered that the layer in which we live--the troposphere--is all but invisible to the naked eye when the entire Earth is in view. From absorbing UV radiation to destroying incoming meteors, the thin layers of gases keep us going.

If a Tree Falls Here and No One is Around...

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IHiuvwyUq14/Tm_AA3p1d6I/AAAAAAAAAG8/Kpxi5SbFT9Q/s400/forest.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651947178545215394" />

The seventh grade has put in their tree plots in the TGS woods! Each of the six plots is 34 feet in diameter (around 900 square feet) and has x and y axes for plotting the location of trees. The kids will identify tree species, calculate the number of board feet in each tree, then attach a price to the trees per each, per species, and per plot. We will look at forest zones over the next week to prepare ourselves for the trip to Moosilauke.

It is Everywhere!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ic_z64rnqTY/Tm--IB4j-uI/AAAAAAAAAG0/Zvn5nVcfE7A/s400/water_drop.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651945102527167202" />

The sixth grade has begun its study of water. We are looking at the water cycle beyond the usual "evaporation-condensation-precipitation" trilogy. Water is found in different stations, lingering in some--like the ocean--for years, or paying a brief nine day visit, as in the atmosphere. We will also look at the making of Lake Champlain in preparation for their trip to the flat and watery part of Vermont.
